Bio Statement for Erika C. Bullock, Ph.D.
Dr. Erika C. Bullock is Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a member of the Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies and an affiliate faculty member in the Department of African American Studies and the Department of Education Policy Studies. She is also a Fellow in the UW-Madison Teaching Academy, an honor bestowed on the university’s best teachers.

Dr. Bullock’s work spans curriculum studies, urban education, mathematics education and STEM education. She uses theories from urban sociology, cultural studies, literary theory, and science and technology studies to examine how issues and ideologies within mathematics and STEM education grow out of historical precedents and to examine how power operates within these disciplines to create and maintain racial inequities.
Dr. Bullock is a 2017 National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation postdoctoral fellow and 2019-20 Nellie McKay Postdoctoral Fellow.
Her work has been published in outlets including Educational Studies, Educational Studies in Mathematics, The Journal of Education, Review of Research in Education, and Teachers College Record as well as several books. She has also been featured in The Atlantic and was awarded the 2017 Taylor and Francis Publication Best Paper Award and the 2021 Early Career Publication Award for the American Educational Research Association’s Special Interest Group on Research in Mathematics Education.
In her community, Dr. Bullock is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Kappa Psi Omega Chapter. She is a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Madison, WI where she serves as a chair of the Board of Christian Education. She is also co-chair of MTZ Charitable Organization’s Building Committee tasked with overseeing fundraising and construction for a $8 million family life center. Dr. Bullock is also a freelance writer for Umoja Magazine based in Madison, WI.
